It may come as no surprise that I've been collecting stacks of San Francisco street maps and travel guides from the 1920s, 30s and 40s for my Fly From Evil campaigns. Inspired by the look of a particularly nice map from the mid-30s, I built some fonts to create similar street labels, complete with identical mild stressing and bloating. This particular one, "Powell and Geary," is the simplest of the lot, an all-caps labeling font similar to several faces common in functional, non-decorative graphics of the 30s, especially on maps and charts (I keep running into it, too, when reading old 1930s agriculture magazines; don't ask me why I'm reading such things...)
